OUR LIP BALM INGREDIENTS

HyDrogenated soy bean oil

This is C-3 soy wax. Our soy wax is produced from the oil obtained from soy beans, which is then purified and solidified into a wax. Soy wax is an environmentally friendly alternative to paraffin wax and a vegan alternative to beeswax. It helps to soften skin and offers moisturising and nourishing qualities which are also great for the skin. In addition, soy wax contains natural emollients that effectively retain moisture and smooth the skin.

Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter

This is cocoa butter; a hard, brittle oil that is solid at room temperature. It is derived from the fat from cacao or cocoa beans. Cocoa butter is highly prized for it’s moisturising properties and the cocoa butter we use is food grade and unrefined. Cocoa butter can soothe skin irritation and smooth dry skin, wrinkles, scars and other marks on the skin. Additionally, it known to help heal rashes from conditions like dermatitis and eczema. Cocoa butter is also rich in phytochemicals; these are natural plant compounds that improve blood flow to the skin and slow aging by protecting the skin against harmful UV rays.

Cocos nucifera Oil

This is coconut oil. The coconut oil we use is refined and originates from the Philippines. Coconut oil is produced from dried coconut shells and then put through a refining process which includes bleaching and deodorising the oil. This removes all impurities and its coconut flavour and scent. It is a very efficient way of producing coconut oil, which is why it is the most economical grade available. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, it deeply moisturises, forming a protective barrier to keep lips soft and supple. Its antibacterial properties also help fend off infections, making it a go-to for chapped or cracked lips. We only use a small amount in our formula due to the fact it is a comedogenic, which means it can clog pores.

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter

This is shea butter; a solid oil that is produced from the nuts grown on the shea tree. It is native to Western Africa and has been used for centuries to nourish and moisturise the skin. We use refined shea butter in our recipe because it is odourless. Shea butter is a great ingredient for lip care because it is rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin E, and fatty acids. These nutrients are essential for keeping the lips healthy and soft.

RICinus Communis Seed Oil

This is castor oil; extracted from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, a native to tropical areas of Asia and Africa. The oil is usually extracted from the seeds before going through the heating process. This heating process deactivates the toxic enzymes within the oil, allowing it to be used safely.  The castor oil we use is 100% pure and hexane free. Castor oil is rich in the monounsaturated fatty acid ricinoleic acid, a known humectant. Humectants help retain skin moisture by preventing water loss through the outer layer of your skin.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil

This is sweet almond oil, extracted from almonds and it is light golden in colour. Our sweet almond oil is refined and has no natural scent. Sweet almond oil is a great source of vitamin E, which is great for skin and hair care. Historically, almond oil had been used in Ancient Chinese, Ayurvedic and Greco-Persian schools of Medicine to treat dry skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Due to its high fatty acid content, almond oil can easily penetrate the gaps in lips to help hydrate and seal in moisture. The vitamin E concentration is also excellent for keeping lips supple and smooth. The worldly elements that can cause dark skin, chapped lips and cracked skin can be protected by the use of almond oil.

Mangifera Indica Seed Butter

This is mango butter. It is pressed from the kernels of the mango and is a light yellow coloured oil that is solid and firm at room temperature. It is similar to shea butter in its qualities and consistency, however mango butter has a neutral scent. Mango butter is rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and E, that immediately attack dryness and chapped lips. It makes a great ingredient to use in lip balms.

Helianthus Annuus SEED Oil

This is sunflower oil and it’s not just used for cooking; it is great for your skin and hair too. Because of its high fatty acid concentration, sunflower oil has great emollient benefits. Emollients provide a protective barrier to moisturise, soften and smooth the skin. Sunflower oil is also rich in linoleic acid, which helps to strengthen the skin barrier. This means it will help limit water loss and protect your lips from environmental stressors. The body's natural oils are enhanced by sunflower oil, which is high in vitamin E.

Tocopherol

This is the highly concentrated vitamin E oil we use. It contains around 70% vitamin E and is infused in sunflower oil. Some vitamin E oils are produced synthetically, however the vitamin E oil we use is 100% natural and is distilled from sunflower oil. Vitamin E oil for lips is an excellent moisturiser that restores skin hydration and is ideal for dry and cracked lips. It also conditions lips and keeps them plush. Vitamin E oil, usually used in lip care products, has humectant properties that hydrate, and emollient properties, which support the skin barrier.

Essential oils

We only use essential oils to scent our lip balms. Using essential oils are a more natural way of scenting products, as opposed to synthetically created fragrance oils. Lip balms that are scented with essential oils have a more natural scent, however they do still contain allergens which naturally occur within the essential oils themselves. These allergens are all listed on our packaging.

The difficulty we find is essential oils can only be taken from certain natural ingredients such as plants and some citrus fruits. The scents are also not as strong and do not last as long as synthetic lab-made fragrance oils. Whilst it is a shame we do not have the range of choice and longevity of synthetic scents, we much prefer the more natural option.

The essential oils we currently use in our lip balms include: Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia Oil), Orange (Citrus Sinensis Peel Oil), Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea Oil), Sandalwood Amyris (Amyris Balsamifera Oil), Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil), Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisi Peel Oil), Peppermint (Mentha Piperita Oil) and Lemon (Citrus Limon Peel Oil).

Many essential oils have allergens that naturally occur in the oils. These allergens are in all our sales listings and in our ingredients booklet included in the packaging of every purchase.

A Note On Our Lip Balm Making Process

Our lip balm is made by gently melting down solid ingredients, combining them together with the liquid ingredients and leaving them to harden. All our formulas are tried, tested and perfected from scratch. This means when the products get to you, the kinks have already been rigorously worked through.

The lips have more than a million different nerve endings, making them one of the most sensitive parts of the body, one hundred times more sensitive than the fingertips. All ingredients we include in our lip balm formulation have been carefully chosen and are safe to be used on the lips. We use the most gentle ingredients for our lip balms to resemble the feel you would get from a Vaseline type product.
